Abatement orders are the strongest administrative sanctions available to the District. Abatement proceedings are typically initiated when a source of air pollution continually violates District rules. Abatement proceedings may be initiated by the District staff, the Board of Directors or the Hearing Board.
Abatement orders are considered by the independent Yolo-Solano AQMD Hearing Board. The District must prove that the source will continue to illegally pollute unless restrained by an order for abatement. If issued, violation of an abatement order exposes the polluting source to a penalty of as much as $25,000 for each day of violation as well as criminal sanctions.
